Protect yourself from mosquito-borne disease (fact sheet)

Mosquitoes can spread viruses to humans through bites. In Victoria, the most common mosquito‑borne diseases are Ross River virus and Barmah Forest virus. Less common viruses such as Japanese encephalitis, Murray Valley encephalitis, West Nile virus and dengue are rare but can cause severe illness.

Warm and wet weather can mean more mosquito biting and breeding, including those that can carry diseases that make you sick.

Your only protection against mosquitoes and the diseases they can carry is to avoid mosquito bites.
