Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale (EPDS)
The Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale (EPDS) is a validated screening tool for depression during pregnancy and the postnatal period. These translations have been linguistically validated by Western Sydney Local Health District Translation Services.
The EPDS is a screening tool, not a diagnostic instrument, and helps identify women who require further mental health assessment. Screening should occur early in pregnancy, at least once later in pregnancy, and again 6–12 weeks after birth, with a repeat screen during the first postnatal year.
Women scoring 10–12 should be monitored and re-screened in 2–4 weeks. Scores of 13 or more require further assessment. Any positive response to Question 10 requires immediate mental health assessment and urgent action if suicidal ideation is disclosed.
