Benzodiazepines are a type of medicine that has a sedative or calming effect. Benzodiazepines are prescribed to people who are anxious or distressed and can be used in the short-term treatment of some sleep problems. They can be prescribed by doctors to treat people who are experiencing mania.These medicines can be very effective when used for short periods of time under the supervision of your doctor. They do not replace other medications that your doctor has prescribed such as antipsychotics, antidepressants and mood stabilisers.
